The Institute of Beauty and Wellness is excited to start our first Ayurvedic Practitioner Program on June 3, 2013. While Ayurveda has been in practice for over 5,000 years, it is not commonly known in the Midwest area so we wanted to share some of the most commonly asked questions that we have received to help educate about the program.

1. Why should I go to IBW to become an Ayurvedic Practitioner versus somewhere else?

The program at IBW is unique in that it is an integrative program that offers not only training as an ayurvedic practitioner, but also incorporates a yoga teacher certification and ayurvedic body therapist in the curriculum.  No other program in the US offers this level of training.  One would have to attend three different training programs which would more than likely require a longer period of study and considerably more money.  Our comprehensive training program is under 1 year (46 weeks) which is approximately half of the time in comparison to other programs as most are two years or longer. Upon completion of the IBW program, graduates will have a wide variety of skills that will greatly enhance their ability to become successfully employed whether in a spa or clinical setting or by establishing their own private practice.

The IBW program also offers 286 clinical hours, more than most programs in the US.  Since the clinic is on-site students do not have to worry about finding their own intern clients.  The internship is integrated into the program, so you will have assistance in finding clients, setting up appointments and taking payments.  In other programs the internship comes after the theoretical study and may drag on for another year or longer.

2. How many hours will I be on the clinic floor?

There are 286 hours allotted for clinical practice.

3. What is Sanskrit? Why do we learn it?

Sanskrit is the language of Ayurveda.  All Ayurveda and yogic texts were originally written in Sanskrit.  There are some ayurvedic terms that we cannot directly translate into English so we have to keep the Sanskrit terminology.  At IBW students will learn the Sanskrit alphabet so that they may learn to correctly pronounce ayurvedic and yogic terminology.

4. What does a typical school day look like in the Ayurvedic Program?

A typical school day in the Ayurvedic program will begin with a mindfulness exercise (meditation, relaxation, breathing awareness, centering) and a lecture on Ayurveda in the morning; a one hour lunch; and a lecture and/or practicum in the afternoon based on anatomy and physiology, or Ayurveda, or yoga, or Ayurvedic body therapies.  As the program progresses clinical work will be added so that by the last quarter of the program two full days will be devoted to clinical experience (students performing body therapies or doing ayurvedic consultations on guests).

Join us for the Annual Earth Month Walk the Ward for Clean Water – Tuesday, April 30.

Earth Month, a month that we dedicate to raising funds for clean water – locally as well as globally. There is not a better place to walk in our neighborhood to appreciate the value in clean water, than our very our Historic River-walk. The walk will be a 2+ mile walk as this is the average distance that women in developing countries walk to collect clean water every day. All proceeds of the walk, along with our other Earth Month activities are donated to the Alliance for the Great Lakes – working to restore and protect our very own Lake Michigan.

As many of you know, April is Earth Month and it is a month that we dedicate to raising funds for clean water – locally as well as globally. This year, we are excited to join forces with the global Aveda Network and be a part of breaking the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest Cut-a-thon. The festivities will begin in Asia on Earth Day (Monday, April 22nd) and continue around the globe for 24 hours.  We will be a part of the celebration from 10:30am -8:30pm and offering $10 hair cuts, blowdry style, flat iron style and manicures on Earth Day. Our goal is to provide at least 200 services so please spread the word. Your efforts will help raise money to support local clean water with The Alliance for the Great Lakes and also give you a new spring-time do!
